Fine Arts Department/ Visual Art

Amy Chapman Johnson, Visual Art Teacher

Mrs. Johnson studied art at Drake University and the University of South Carolina, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art education in 1992. She received a M.Ed. in special education (learning disabilities) from the University of Charleston in 2000, where she was named Outstanding M.Ed. Student in her major.

Past commissioned and exhibited art includes drawing, acrylics, watercolor painting, portraits, and photography. Nature, travel and art history are some of the biggest influences in her work. Mrs. Johnson began to develop her photography skills while teaching advanced placement studio art at Bishop England and while traveling.

Mrs. Johnson is a past executive board member and committee chair of the Mount Pleasant Artists Guild. Mrs. Johnson’s art work has been shown in group exhibitions locally, in Washington, D.C. and in Atlanta. Her most recent group show was the High School Art Teacher’s Invitational at Columbia College.

Bishop England art students regularly participate in competitions such as the Coastal Carolina Fair Youth Art Exhibit, Scholastic Art and Writing, Charleston Artist Guild Artistic Merit Awards and First Federal of Charleston High School Seniors Art Exhibit. Several Bishop England graduates continue their study of art at the college level. Past students include present day architects, graphic artists, web designers, interior designers, landscape architects and fine artists.
